Rutland County Show 2023- Horticultural Tent

This year was our second year entering Root and Branch Out’s Community Pots competition at the Rutland County Show. We were thrilled to win a gold award.

The theme this year was colour and, as a group, we chose to focus on rainbows. Read more about our community pot entry below.

Rainbows can be a sign of hope, luck, a storm passing, love, inclusivity and even mystery.

They are a magical phenomenon sparking joy in anyone fortunate enough to spot one.

Over 1 million colours make up a rainbow, many not visible to the human eye.

For our planter this year we have chose a perennial that showcases one of each of the 7 most well-known colours making up a rainbow. Much like our own minds, Perennial plants get knocked down, they have to survive in harsh conditions, they may well hibernate and rest, but nevertheless, each year they come back stronger, ready to bloom again.

We often associate colours with our mental health and emotions as well.

Red can be seen as a symbol of strength, power, passion and also the greatest form of love.

Orange can convey a sense of warmth, creativity, ambition, endurance and approachability.

Yellow is the colour of happiness and bright energy.

Green is seen all around us in nature. It is the colour of life and growth, health and wealth. But too much and you may turn green with envy.

Blue can bring peace, relaxation and stability or perhaps melancholy on a gloomy day.

Indigo is a colour debated amongst many scientists. As such, it is the colour of mystery. A mix of both blue and purple, indigo can bring feelings of wisdom, spirituality, and intuition.

Violet with its purple traits provokes a sense of luxury but also of selflessness, kindness and empathy.

Every rainbow is unique to you, no two people will view the colours in the same way. Next time you spot a rainbow, pause, take in its beauty and think about your own emotions. What colour best represents you in the moment?

No matter what, remember, that just like a Perennial Plant, you will bloom again, the storm will pass.

It’s ok to take a break, we can’t bloom all year round.
